We’re pleased to introduce Yasu Saegusa, the next employee in our spotlight series. Yasu joined our team as VP of Underwriting in August 2020.
As VP of Underwriting, Yasu is responsible for managing the profitability of portfolios with assigned brokers and efficiently managing relationships with those brokers.
He says he loves the continued learning aspect associated with the underwriter role. “You learn something new every single day, whether that being about a risk, a clause or coverage, type of commodity, or freight forwarding—it keeps you on your toes.”
As for his favorite part about working for Falvey, Yasu says, “It is the people of FIG that make me want to come to work every day, succeed, and contribute.” He continues, “The fact that I am able to focus on being an underwriter and manage my portfolio the best way I can is because of the culture that Mike Falvey has created and provides for us.” Yasu also speaks highly of the management team and considers the underwriting support team “the best in the industry.”
Prior to joining our Falvey Team, Yasu held many underwriting positions in the marine industry in cities worldwide, including Tokyo, Osaka, New York, and Los Angeles.
Yasu was born in Kobe, Japan, and moved to the United States at nine years old. He’s fluent in English and Japanese and says playing baseball helped him learn English as a child. Baseball continues to hold a special place in Yasu’s heart, as he has fond childhood memories of playing the game with his late father.
Today, Yasu still loves the sport and plays baseball in recreational leagues. When he’s not on the field, he enjoys spending time with his two-year-old son, Coby, who he hopes will become a “big baseball star one day.”
