2021 IUMI Virtual Conference Recap

Written by Falvey Cargo Underwriting | September 15, 2021

The International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) 2021 virtual Seoul conference was held on September 2-15. It was hosted by the General Insurance Association of Korea for the first time since the establishment of IUMI. This is the second year in a row the event was held virtually. The first year was last year for the online Sweden conference. The conference took place over the course of 10 days, with each day dedicated to specific marine insurance and industry-related topics.

Isabelle Therrien, senior vice president of Falvey Cargo Underwriting and chairperson of the IUMI Cargo Committee, was one of the 60+ speakers and 429 delegates in attendance. The Facts and Figures, Loss Prevention, and Offshore Energy Committees were just a few of the many committees that hosted workshops. Presentations covered a wide range of subjects, such as safety considerations on the use of alternative ship fuels, cyber security in the maritime industry, and sustainability and greening shipping.

Isabelle provided the Cargo workshop report and introduction. During her presentation, she reported on the correction in the insurance cargo market involving a stronger premium base, addressed the effects of COVID-19 on global supply chains, and discussed how world trade recovery could positively impact the cargo sector.

Again this year, due to pandemic restrictions, IUMI was a virtual event. Despite this, it was an engaging conference with very informative workshops. As chair of the Cargo committee, It was my pleasure to host the Cargo workshop which included discussions on the EVER GIVEN, Human rights on supply chain, Vaccine transportation and container stack collapse, all topics extremely pertinent to the cargo insurance community. The conference was a successful event and true to its theme provided a great perspective on how to build a pathway to a sustainable, resilient and innovative future for Marine insurers.  ” says Isabelle of the event.
